Okonkwo is a famous man in the village of Umuofia. He is a wrestling champion and leader of a clan. He strives to be the opposite of his father Unoka, who was an indolent debtor unable to support his wife or children, preferring flute-playing over struggling for success. Okonkwo works hard from a young age to build fame and wealth all on his own.

Obi has missed the last meeting, in November of 1956, because he has been in Umuofia. He is planning to attend the December 1st meeting, however, on the day that this chapter opens. Obi tells Joseph that they will pick him up at his house in time for the 4:30 meeting.

When Obi returns to Nigeria, his arrival is celebrated by the Umuofia Progressive Union. It is autumn 1956, and he gets a civil-service job with the Scholarship Board.

To Umofia Union, Obi Okonkwo when he completes his education in London "would have a European Post" in the civil service. To the secretary of the union, with Obi's education, Umuofia "would now join the community of other towns in their march towards political irredentism, social equality and economic emancipation.

Obi is a 26 year old man who lives in Nigeria. U.P.U., which is also known as the Umofia Progressive Union, gave Obi a scholarship to study law in England which he must pay back when he returns to Nigeria.
