Octane rating - Wikipedia
Octanes are a family of hydrocarbons that are typical components of gasoline. They are colorless liquids that boil around 125 °C (260 °F). One member of the octane family, 2,2,4-Trimethylpentane (iso-octane), is used as a reference standard to benchmark the tendency of gasoline or LPG fuels to resist self-ignition.
Gasoline explained - octane in depth - U.S. Energy Information ...
2022年11月17日 · What is octane? In recent years, car manufacturers have been requiring or recommending premium gasoline (a high-octane grade of fuel) for use in more of their vehicle models. The difference in prices between premium and lower octane grades has also increased. Octane ratings are measures of fuel stability.
What Is Octane and How Does It Work? | HowStuffWorks
2024年2月21日 · It's a hydrocarbon molecule that gives gasoline the ability to resist detonating prematurely in the engine, which causes engine knocking or pinging during combustion. An octane rating measures the amount of the molecule that is in everyday gasoline. The higher the octane number, the greater the fuel's resistance to knocking.
Octane - Wikipedia
Octane is a component of gasoline and petroleum. Under standard temperature and pressure, octane is an odorless, colorless liquid. Like other short-chained alkanes with a low molecular weight, it is volatile, flammable, and toxic. Octane is 1.2 to 2 times more toxic than heptane. [5]
Types of Gasoline Explained: Learn the Differences
2024年12月5日 · This guide explains the different octane ratings for fuel found at gas stations, why some types of gasoline cost more, and which gas you should use, whether buying, selling, or...
Selecting the Right Octane Fuel - FuelEconomy.gov
Octane rating is the measure of a fuel's ability to resist "knocking" or "pinging" during combustion, caused by the air/fuel mixture detonating prematurely in the engine. In the U.S., unleaded gasoline typically has octane ratings of 87 (regular), 88–90 (midgrade), and 91–94 (premium).

The gasoline octane rating measures its ability to withstand pre-ignition during compression in an engine cylinder. Gasoline octane is a critical factor in engine design. Engine performance and efficiency increase with increasing compression ratio. Engines with higher compression ratios require gasolines with higher octane ratings.
Octane rating - Energy Education
Octane rating, also known as octane number is a measurement of the quality or performance of gasoline. The higher the number, the better the fuel burns within the engine of a vehicle. Higher performance vehicles require fuels with a higher octane rating.
Analysis of Octane Costs - Energy Information Administration
In the United States, since approximately 2010, the price difference between regular gasoline with an octane rating, or Anti–Knock Index (AKI), of 87, and premium gasoline with an AKI of 91 has been increasing.
