Olds FAQ -- Engines - ClassicOldsmobile.com
It is funny how the public relations people at Olds advertised the compression ratio in the 442 at 10.5 to 1 and the W-33 Delta and the Toro W-34 were 10.25 to 1. The horsepower ratings were so varied on these 3 identical engines too!
Olds FAQ -- Heads - ClassicOldsmobile.com
All Olds big block heads have the same mounting holes, port sizes, etc., and thus are interchangeable. Even the combustion chambers are equal at 80cc, plus or minus a little. Olds achieved different compression ratios by using pistons with different size dishes in the top. Some W-30 heads were rumored to have been factory-milled for a smaller ...
Olds FAQ -- Wheels / Tires - ClassicOldsmobile.com
The N83 wheels came only with the high-performance Cutlasses (H/O, 442) from 1983-1987. The Hurst/Olds wheels had argent painted insets and a red pinstripe, whereas the 442 versions had gold painted insets and gold pinstripes. Olds FAQ -- 455 CID Engine Detail - ClassicOldsmobile.com
1969 - 1970 Toronado 455 vs 442 455 I know 365 horses is the stock rating for the 442, but what about the Toronado. I have an F block and E heads. What is my engine out of and what is the horsepower rating for the 69 & 70 Toronado? The stock Toronado intake is noticeably lower than the intake on the 442 motor. This is the most obvious giveaway.
Olds FAQ -- 442 - ClassicOldsmobile.com
Besides the drivetrain, many of the 442 goodies were available on most Cutlasses, which makes it a cool package. Back then, many of the "performance" packages were merely sticker packages - the Olds 442 was actually a power package (well, relative to the era). Engine Specs: 5.0-liter V-8, 4-bbl. Carburetor H.O. (LG8) with Dual Outlet Exhaust System
Olds FAQ -- 1965 - 1976 Option Codes - ClassicOldsmobile.com
The W-29 option is the code for a 442. It was used from 1964-1967 and then again from 1972-1980 or so as the 442 was an option on a Cutlass or F-85. During the 68-71 years the 442 was it's own separate series of cars. If it was used from 1967-1971, it loosely meant the 442 model. [ Thanks to Jim Chermack for this information ]
Olds FAQ -- Steering - ClassicOldsmobile.com
83-84 Hurst Olds 85-87 Olds 442 84-87 Grand National/T-Type (Turbo) These "quickest" steering boxes did not come in every "G" body, so before you take one out of a donor car, or pay the recycle yard for one, always count the number of turns from lock to lock. As stated, the quick ratio's are between 2 1/4 to 2 3/4 turns.
