Hyperici Oleum (St. John's wort oil) used in wound healing contains no hypericin. By using the sunlight maceration method described in the supplement to DAB 6 (EB 6), lipophilic breakdown products of this compound are obtained which lend the oil its red colour.

Hyperici oleum is used in human medicine orally for treatment of dyspepsia and topically for the treatment of open wounds and blunt injuries, myalgia and first-degree burns. Hyperici herba or its hydroethanolic preparations are used internally for treatment of psychovegetative disturbances, depressive moods, anxiety and/or nervous unrest.

Hypericum perforatum is one of the oldest and most experimentally and clinically studied herbal drugs. In this work, using HPLC/MS/MS, we investigated the chemical composition of the methanolic extract of the flowering tops of Oleum Hyperici, an ancient remedy obtained following the methodology reported in Deutsche Arzneibuch 6 (DAB).
