Onyx is a series of visualization systems designed and manufactured by SGI, introduced in 1993 and offered in two models, deskside and rackmount, codenamed Eveready and Terminator respectively. Onyx's basic system architecture is based on the SGI Challenge servers, but with graphics hardware.

Based on the same core technology the Onyx 4 system was introduced. All of these systems are members of the Chimera family which also includes the Tezro workstation. The three systems are based on the same hardware featuring SGIs NUMAflex technology. Adding a VPro graphics option to an Origin 350 makes it an Onyx 350.

Onyx Onyx can be configured with up to 24 R4400 CPUs for a very cost-effective supercomputing, multiprocessor environment. The Onyx R4400 CPU has primary instruction and data caches of 16KB and a 4MB secondary cache.

The Onyx4 Graphics Workstation features the sames modular archetecture as the Origin 350 but adds ATI FireGL graphics. Each Onyx4 chassis takes up only 2U in a standard 19inch rack with the base system requring 2 chassis (one compute module with PCI for the IO9, the other with AGP slots for FireGL graphics).

The Onyx is a high-end workstation from 1993. With four 64-bit MIPS R4400 CPUs and a Reality Engine 2 graphics subsystem, it was one of the most powerful graphics systems available at the time. This is the deskside version - SGI also made a more expandable rack version.

SGI On y x Systems Features: Processing capabilities scale from single 150MHz R4400SC, to 28 195MHz R10000SC processors. Memory from 64MB all the way to 8GB. 2 SCSI busses standard, 1 Fast10 Narrow SE, 1 Fast10 Wide Differential Graphics options are VTX, RE2, Infinite Reality with up to 7 monitor connections per graphics pipe.
