2018年11月1日 · The difference between the open and closed pneumothorax depends upon the type of trauma that causes an open wound or a closed wound. In open pneumothorax, chest wall is punctured, and the air enters the pleural cavity from outside as in the cases such as stabbing, gun wounds etc.

If the air enters the pleural cavity, either from the outside (open pneumothorax) or from the lung (closed pneumothorax), the lung collapses and it becomes difficult for the person to breath.

There are 3 mechanisms: closed, open and tension. Closed pneumothorax: Air from the lung itself leaks into the pleural space through a tear in the lung tissue (e.g. when a fractured rib end tears the lung), causing the lung to collapse.

Besides the placement of a chest seal and monitoring bleeding, the management of an open pneumothorax is the same as a closed pneumothorax (oxygen, monitors, and frequent reassessment).

An open pneumothorax occurs when air accumulates between the chest wall and the lung as the result of an open chest wound or other physical defect. The larger the opening, the greater the degree of lung collapse and difficulty of breathing.

Open pneumothorax results from a penetrating thoracic injury that permits entry of air into the chest, while closed pneumothorax is the accumulation of air originating from the respiratory system within the pleural space.
