The issue, as you know, is all of the optos. The rectangle theory doesn't really work when you have optos involved since there is no physical connection between the row and column as there is with a switch. I would guess the problem is on the opto board. Check the LM339's for shorts with a DMM (game off, diode/continuity mode).

I don't have any information on what Gottlieb used. The main concern will be the load resistors they used on the driver, the load resistors will provide the proper forward voltage to the IR Emitter and if this voltage exceeds the MAX forward voltage of the IR emitter (1.7V for the QED123) will eventually ruin the emitter.

When my optos were not working the coils kept firing thinking there was a ball blocking. This was from the fuse for the 12 volt supply being blown. So the optos are all connected to a small board under the playfield and that send the signal to the switch matrix so maybe that's unplugged. Ramp Opto board or something.

Normal optos work with light but in this case radio waves are used to bridge the distance . This technique is provided by the 24-opto board and L1 on it fails very often .
