The Daleks (/ ˈdɑːlɛks / ⓘ DAH-leks) are a fictional extraterrestrial race of extremely xenophobic [1][2] mutants principally portrayed in the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who. They were conceived by writer Terry Nation and first appeared in the 1963 Doctor Who serial The Daleks, in casings designed by Raymond Cusick.

Over the Daleks' history, the basic Dalek was first slatless and silver-white when using Dalek War Machines (TV: The Daleks [+] Terry Nation, Doctor Who season 1 (BBC tv, 1963-1964)., COMIC: Genesis of Evil [+] unclear authorship, The Daleks comics (City Magazines, 1965).

Dapol, which produced a range of toys based on the classic series of Doctor Who, released an original Christmas-themed Dalek (W008-XMAS), which had a green body with a golden dome, eyepiece, gunstick, and manipulator arm, with a red neck grille, slats and sense globes.

Originally the Dalek creature remained a mystery. In the first Dalek story all that was shown was a claw hand sliding out from under a blanket. Later in the 60’s the Dalek appeared as a mutated ‘blob’. In the 80’s the same idea was applied, a green coloured mutation. Between 1963 and 1988 it was rare seeing the Dalek interior.

The idea of the Daleks was created by Terry Nation. They appeared in the second Doctor Who story called ‘The Dead Planet‘ in 1963.
