Meleagrinella echinata (Wm. Smith) and occasional Ornithella obovata (Sow.) (the latter seen in section only) occur throughout. The lowest 1+ ft. is full of these and other shells, especially Trigonia angulata Sow., T. crucis Sharp (--rolandi Cross), Astarte hilpertonensis Lycett.

Overlying the Forest Marble is the highly distinctive formation known as the Cornbrash, a term originally applied in Wiltshire to certain stony or brashy soils that are well suited to the growth of cereals. The typical lithology is a brown, fossiliferous non-oolitic, rubbly limestone with abundant shell debris and a marly matrix.

Arkell (1944) and Douglas and Arkell (1932) used a two-fold brachiopod zonal classification for the Lower Cornbrash, the Cererithyris intermedia Subzone overlain by the Ornithella obovata Subzone. The current ammonite zonal classification follows Torrens (1974), the Clydoniceras (Clydoniceras) discus, Zone and Subzone.

The forest marble ridge at Rudge, near Beckington, Somerset
The zonal ammonite, Clydoniceras discus, was found in the trench near Rudge Lane (31/812524). Although occupying a wide outcrop, the deposit is fairly thin, and consists of rubbly limestone with a mixed intermedia and obovata fauna.
