Osei Bonsu (born 1779 [11] – 21 January 1824) [12] [13] also known as Osei Tutu Kwame [8] was the Asantehene (King of the Ashanti). [14] He reigned either from 1800 to 1824 or from 1804 to 1824. During his reign as the king, the Ashanti fought the Fante confederation and ended up dominating Gold Coast trade.

Osei Bonsu is a British-Ghanaian curator and writer based in London and Paris. He is currently a curator of International Art at Tate Modern, where he is responsible for organising exhibitions, developing the museum’s collection and broadening the representation of artists from Africa and the African diaspora.
It is a portrait of Osei Bonsu as he and his contemporaries chose to see him, and a (re)construction of his person and actions in accordance with the canons of Asante historical understanding and the ideologies of Asante power.

Osei Bonsu (22 October 1900 – 1 March 1977) was a Ghanaian sculptor and practitioner of Ashanti carving. [1] Bonsu was born on 22 October 1900. He was taught carving as an apprentice under his father. He got his start via commissions from Akan chiefs. He carved prolifically from his early twenties to his death in 1977.
