In the water cycle, the most significant process in this respect is that of phase changes, from vapor to liquid or ice and vice versa. The ocean, being the largest water reservoir and relatively homogeneous, was chosen as the reference standard for the scale of both oxygen and hydro-gen isotopes in water samples (Craig 1961a).

The isotope ratios D/H and 18 O/ 16 Oexhibit relatively large variations in natural waters. In precipitation one observes. a lowering of the 18 0 and D concentrations with increasing altitude (“altitude effect”). These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
