The Lockheed P-2 Neptune (designated P2V by the United States Navy prior to September 1962) is a maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft. It was developed for the US Navy by Lockheed to replace the Lockheed PV-1 Ventura and PV-2 Harpoon, and was replaced in turn by the Lockheed P-3 Orion.

The P2V Neptune series of aircraft was one of the more successful post-war designs for America, with service that spanned decades for a handful of American-friendly countries. The "P2V-3C" carrier-launched aircraft. Eleven P2V-3Cs were built to provide the US Navy with a carrier-launched nuclear strike capability. These aircraft were fitted them with eight 4.4 kN (450 kgp / 1,000 lbf) thrust JATO bottles under the rear fuselage. Unsurprisingly, there was no provision for carrier recovery.

VP-65 aircrews have operated in support of naval forces in the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocean, Eastern and Western Pacific Ocean, Southeast Asia, and Central and South America. The squadron flew twelve Lockheed SP-2H Neptunes.

The P2V Neptun is a twin-engine high-wing monoplane. The aircraft was equipped with a variety of Wright branded engines throughout production and demonstrated excellent range. One of the most recognizable features is the single large rudder on the rear wing, although the overall slender nose design is another memorable feature.

2025年1月7日 · The Lockheed P2V Neptune would serve with distinction in Fleet and Reserve Patrol Squadrons for the next 30 years. Beginning in 1962, the Neptune was phased out of front-line service in favor of the newer and more capable Lockheed P-3 Orion based on the L-188 Electra commercial airliner.

The Lockheed P2V "Neptune" is unique in that it is the only American naval land-based patrol plane ever designed expressly for this purpose. Both the Neptune's predecessor, the PV2 "Harpoon", and successor, the P3 "Orion", were first built by Lockheed as transports… the PV2 as the "Lodestar", and the P3 as the "Electra".
