
Why did Amtrak scrap every P30CH and almost every SDP40F?
2007年9月25日 · Why did Amtrak scrap every P30CH and almost every SDP40F? Why not save at least one Pooch? Isn't there only one SDP40F preserved as well? Save some of your equipment for the future, Amtrak! At least some museums got a few F40PH engines! I hadn't heard about this. That would be a shame.

The GE P30CH was one of the first brand-new diesel-electric locomotives built for Amtrak by General Electric during Amtrak's early years. The design was based on the GE U30C, but had a cowl carbody like its EMD competitors. Amtrak operated them between 1975 and 1992.

You got them RIGHT before the end, there, didn't you?!? And while they were long overdue for a good overhaul, cosmetically, they were in great shape right up until they started cutting them up into scrap steal.

Why weren't a lot of locomotives some much more worthy than a P30Ch preserved? Simple, money in many cases saving anything is costly, scrap is a good option for old equipment that has no more use in revenue operation.

Don't know what kind of collision protection P30CH's had, but hitting a loaded truck at 79 MPH is a tough impact for any locomotive to take. The logs on the truck during that collision crush the nose and the Cowl-carbody on the Engineers side.
