As described earlier, the AP-4 project was a progressive adaptation of the Seversky P-35 fighter powered by a turbo-supercharged Pratt and Whitney R-1830-35 radial engine.

On September 13, 1939, the Army ordered eighty examples of a more advanced development of the YP-43 from Republic under the designation P-44.

The resulting aircraft, now known as the P-44 Rocket, was truly impressive. Capable of speeds of 404 mph at 20,000 ft, and a climb rate of 4,000 ft. per minute, the aircraft would have been an exceptional interceptor.

The USAAC was sufficiently interested to assign the AP-4J variant an official designation P-44 Rocket. Combat reports from Europe indicated that the new type was already obsolete, consequently, the entire order was canceled on 13 September 1940, with no prototypes built.
