Provisionally called P75 (from the gun's caliber), the first design (whose prototype was ready on mid-1941) was similar to an enlarged M13/40, but with a 75/18 howitzer (the same fitted on the Semovente da 75/18) and more armour; the prototype was then modified by replacing the main gun with a 75/32 gun with a co-axial machine-gun.

The new project was to include increased armament consisting of one 75/18 gun and one 20 mm L/65 Breda cannon. It was to be powered by a 330 hp Ansaldo diesel engine and the estimated maximum speed was to be 40 km/h. Arthis staged the project and was known either as P75 (due to its main gun caliber) or as P26 (by the weight).

2019年11月2日 · The Carro P 75 (heavy tank with a 75 mm gun) did not last long in this configuration. The Italian military did not consider the heavy tank as a sluggish heavily armoured tank that could serve as a battering ram. They wanted a heavy tank that could have the mobility of a medium tank, if possible accelerating to 40-50 kph.

At the beginning of 1940, they began work on a project for a heavy infantry support tank, which was to fight alongside the medium tanks. The project was initially designated as the P75 for its 75/18 mm cannon, which was later changed to a longer 75/32 gun and finally a 75/34 cannon with better anti-tank capabilities.
