Specific populations of PBN neurons are involved in behaviors including food and water intake, nociceptive responses, breathing regulation, as well as learning and responding appropriately to threatening stimuli.

In this study, we uncovered the lateralized function of the PBN in driving neuropathic pain, which depends on NK1R activation in the right-sided PBN. We also demonstrated that peripheral nerve injury induces short-term facilitation in the spino-parabrachial pathways targeting the right-sided PBN, regardless of the injury side.
