Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) and Area Navigation …
RNAV routes and terminal procedures, including departure procedures (DP s) and standard terminal arrivals (STAR s), are designed with RNAV systems in mind. There are several potential advantages of RNAV routes and procedures:
PBN comprises RNAV and RNP and describes an aircraft’s ability to navigate in terms of performance standards. RNAV enables aircraft to fly on any desired flight path within the coverage of ground- or space-based navigation aids, within the limits of the capability of the aircraft equipage or a combination of both.
The development of this factsheet aims to heighten awareness regarding the charting of PBN SID/STAR in accor - dance with ICAO principles. The primary objective is to foster harmonization in the publication of these proce-dures across Europe, especially in anticipation of the increased number of PBN SID/STAR charts due to the PBN
Section 4. Arrival Procedures - Federal Aviation Administration
Standard Terminal Arrival (STAR) Procedures. A STAR is an ATC coded IFR arrival route established for application to arriving IFR aircraft destined for certain airports. STAR s simplify clearance delivery procedures, and also facilitate transition between en route and instrument approach procedures.

pbn star: Public PBN STARs are normally designed using RNAV 1, RNP 1, or A-RNP NavSpecs. These procedures require system performance currently met by GPS or DME/DME/IRU PBN systems that satisfy the criteria discussed in AC 90-100A, U.S. Terminal and En Route Area Navigation (RNAV) Operations.
(PBN) • Navigation based on specified system performance requirements for aircraft operating on an air traffic route, instrument approach procedure, or in a designated airspace. • Potential for aircraft to demonstrate requirements compliance through a mix of capabilities, rather than only specific equipment. PBN makes key distinctions between
RNAV and RNP Standard Instrument Arrivals (STARs) are instrument flight procedures that connect the en-route airspace to an Approach to a particular runway. These procedures are coded and stored in an aircraft navigation database and can be loaded in the flight plan of the aircraft’s navigation system or Flight Management System (FMS).
Departure, Approach/Extended Approach Control & PBN Operations
The PBN IR has taken a two-step, phased approach such that by 2030, all SIDs/STARs for fixed wing aircraft at IRE’s of EU Treaty States are required to be based on either RNAV 1 (as a minimum) or RNP 1 (option).
Aerodromes with PBN STARs implemented by Dec.2016.
