2015年8月17日 · N85U was a Super Catalina, equipped with R-2600 engines and propellers from a surplus B-25 back in the day when it was believed Catalinas needed more power. The mod was first showcased on PBY N19Q owned by the Monsanto company back in the 1960s and has been applied to many Catalinas over the years.

N85U is no more. The last active Catalina waterbomber has been destroyed. The Cyclone-powered PBY-6A, which spent the last few decades based in Washington state, fighting forest fires, had been hired to appear in the upcoming Nicolas Cage war movie “Indianapolis”, when it was beached two days after its arrival there due to a leak.

On June 29, 2015, a Consolidated PBY-6A Catalina became beached on a sand bar on the shore of Orange Beach, Alabama. The aircraft was being used in the film production of "The U.S.S. Indianapolis: Men of Courage" and had just landed. The aircraft began taking on water and a pump was used to remove the water from the inside of the plane.

2014年9月4日 · PBY is the Navy designation. Our particular airplane was delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force on July 31, 1944. The PBY-5 and PBY-5A were produced from 1939 to 1945, when they then started producing the PBY-6A. That was the last model produced. Over 3,000 PBYs were built by the time production ceased in 1946.
