The protected designation of origin (PDO) is a type of geographical indication of the European Union aimed at preserving the designations of origin of food-related products.

Geographical indications include protected geographical indications (PGI) and protected designations of origins (PDO). These schemes protect the name of a product that comes from a specific region and follows a particular traditional production process.

Product names registered as PDO are those that have the strongest links to the place in which they are made. Products: food, agricultural products and wines. Specifications: Every part of the production, processing and preparation process must take place in the specific region.

Three European Union schemes of geographical indications and traditional specialties, known as protected designation of origin (PDO), protected geographical indication (PGI), and traditional speciality guaranteed (TSG), promote and protect names of agricultural products and foodstuffs, wines and spirits. According to the Commission, provisions governing the use of a name registered as a PDO or PGI in the labelling of other foodstuffs should not be included, in principle, in the specifi cation for that name; compliance with existing EU legislation by economic operators should constitute an adequate guarantee.
