PFM-1 is a small, scatterable Anti-Personnel (AP) mine with a body made from low-density polythene. It comes in two varieties, both identical in external appearance other than a Cyrillic `C' (English `S') cast into the plastic on one side of the flat wing. The PFM-1S version incorporates a self-destruct mechanism.

In order to create a robust, generalized machine learning model that can detect real mines in new environments, we collected data from various grass, rubble and sand minefields showing PFM-1s in many different orientations. To date, we have achieved a 92% accuracy in identifying PFM-1 mines in images that the CNN had not previously seen.

The PFM-1 mine is a reverse-engineered copy of the US BLU-43 mine used in Southeast Asia and is an extremely effective casualty-producing item. A self-destruct variant of this mine, the PFM-1S, is intended to randomly self-destruct over a period of time.
