The PKT (ПК Танковый, "PK Tank") (1968) is a solenoid-fired coaxial version of PK to replace the SGMT Goryunov vehicle-mounted machine gun. Modifications include the removal of the stock, a longer (722 mm (28.4 in)) and heavier barrel that adds 30 m/s (98 ft/s) muzzle velocity, a gas regulator and an electric solenoid trigger.

The PKT is a vehicle machine gun intended for use as a coaxial weapon. For flexible use the PKB was developed. The PKT is solenoid fired and features a much heavier barrel. The PKT is derived from the PK. As such it is a gas operated machine gun firing from the open bolt position.

The Kalashnikov PK is a general-purpose machine gun which has four basic versions: light machine gun firing from an integral bipod – (PK); medium machine gun firing from a universal tripod – (PKS); tank coaxial machine gun – (PKT); and machine gun for armored personnel carriers (in pintle mounts) – (PKB).
