The PR1 - Vereda do Areeiro is a stunning trail in Madeira. It links Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo, the two highest points on the island. This route offers breathtaking panoramic views and the opportunity to walk through tunnels carved out of volcanic rock.

It connects the third highest peak, Pico do Arieiro, at 1,818 meters (5,965 feet), with the highest peak, Pico Ruivo, at 1,862 meters (6,106 feet). So far I’ve completed this hike two times.

Also in this journey you can visit the three highest peaks of Madeira: Pico do Areeiro, Pico das Torres and Pico Ruivo. This is a mountain trail so it requires some physical preparation and endurance for hikers, who are faced with many ups and downs. However, the effort required is offset by extraordinary views that the walk provides.

2024年8月29日 · From 4th September, the PR1 walking route will now be open as far as the Pedra Rija viewpoint (1.2km stretch). PR 1.1 will be open from the Pico Ruivo "Casa de Abrigo" to Ilha and PR 1.2 will be open from Achada do Teixeira to the Pico Ruivo "Casa de Abrigo".
