The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) class T1 duplex-drive 4-4-4-4 steam locomotives, introduced in 1942 with two prototypes and later in 1945-1946 with 50 production examples, were the last steam locomotives built for the PRR and arguably its most controversial.

2020年11月17日 · The test reports were excellent and elated PRR motive power men placed orders for fifty engines. All of the engines were built during 1945 and 1946. Altoona built locomotives 5500-5524, plus all the tenders, while Baldwin built locomotives 5525-5549. Only very slight modifications appeared in the design.

PRR envisioned using the engines to haul express passenger trains on the 713-mile (1,147-km) route between Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Chicago, Illinois.

By then, wartime restrictions made it difficult for railroads to acquire new passenger locomotives, but in December 1944 the PRR board was able to authorize the production of fifty T1 duplexes. Half (#5500-5524) would be built at the road’s own Altoona shops; the rest (#5525-5549) by Baldwin Locomotive Works.

The styling, including a distinctive wind-splitter nose that presaged BLW’s sharknose road diesel design, was the creation of famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy.
