The EMD GP7 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division and General Motors Diesel between October 1949 and May 1954. [2] The GP7 was the first EMD road locomotive to use a hood unit design instead of a car-body design.

General-purpose road-switcher for freight and passenger services, the GP7 has been the first diesel locomotives developed by EMD with this design (NO cab diesel). The prototype No.8550 was acquired by PRR in 1953. The GP7 serve the "the standard railroad of the world" since 1951.

I bought this Sunset GP7 many years ago with the intention of removing the roof top air tanks and making it a freight unit. This was made in Japan in 1984 as very early S Scale brass. My procrastination of starting this loco lead to the discovery of PRR 8553, which ran with some frequency on the PRSL as a passenger unit.

Pictured with the wayward reefer is PRR engine #8572, an ES-15M built by GM-EMD in September of 1953 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. ("Stoneborobranch"; #32 of 56) MDiv. This is Bachmann 65601 HO GP7 PRR #8809/DCC Sound. EMD GP7 with sound and DCC, Pennsylvania Railroad #8809 (brunswick green). Introduced in 1949, the Electro-Motive 1500hp GP-7 combined the machinery of the F7 with a hood-type carbody that offered high visibility and easy engine access.
