They became the railroad's standard light freight locomotive, replacing all other class H 2-8-0s, and a number remained in service until the end of PRR steam locomotive operation in 1957. 968 class H8 of various subclasses were constructed, along with 274 class H9s and 273 class H10s.

From 1907 onwards, the PRR initially procured 540 Consolidations of classes H8 to H8c, which were still operated with saturated steam. In addition, 146 of them had already been built as H8sb or H8sc with superheaters. Most of the former were also soon superheated.

PRR recast plate from a PRR H9s 2-8-0 originally built as an H8b by Baldwin. PRR made a new plate for the engine when it was upgraded. The Altoona Association of Model Railroaders maintains a large collection of PRR artifacts, in addition to an excellent model railroad.

Class H2a (Locobase 16436) Data from PRR 3 109-D 1904 Class and Description of Locomotives supplied in August 2013 by Allen Stanley from his extensive Rail Data Exchange collection. The significant difference between the H2 Consolidations shown in Locobase 1151 and built in the same years and the H2a was the crown-bar firebox fitted in the latter.

PRR No. 6940, Class M1, Mountain (4-8-2) type built Baldwin Locomotive Works, 1926. The engine in the right background is a Consolidation, probably class H6a, built around the turn of the last century, 26 or 27 years before I took the picture.
