The EMD SD9 is a model of diesel locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between January 1954 and June 1959. An EMD 567C 16-cylinder engine generated 1,750 horsepower (1.30 MW). Externally similar to its predecessor, the SD7, the SD9 was built with the improved and much more maintainable 567C engine.

Built in 1958, #6916 served 3 owners (PRR, PC and Conrail) in its 25-years. The #1224 at age 36 was sold to E&LS in 1992; retirement came 10 years later. Ordered by WC, the SD9 was delivered to merger partner SOO as 2381. Loco built as Espee 5418 and later re-built to SD9E 4406, shown at Mojave, CA.

It followed the early SD7, offering a slight increase in horsepower. While the industry remained settled on four-axle power in general road service, the SD9 nevertheless saw higher sales than its predecessor.
