It does this by interfering with the thyroid peroxidase enzyme, which normally aids in the incorporation of iodine into the thyroglobulin protein to form the thyroid hormones.

Propylthiouracil (PTU) is a prescription medication used to manage hyperthyroidism and Graves' disease. The most common side effects of PTU include rash, itching, hives, abnormal hair loss, and skin pigmentation.
