The Piper PA-23, named Apache and later Aztec, is an American four- to six-seat twin-engined light aircraft aimed at the general aviation market. The United States Navy and military forces in other countries also used it in small numbers.

Pennsylvania Route 23 (PA 23) is an 81.14-mile-long (130.58 km) state highway in southeastern Pennsylvania. The route begins at PA 441 in Marietta and heads east to U.S. Route 1 (US 1) at City Avenue on the border of Lower Merion Township and Philadelphia.

Powered by two 125 hp Lycoming O-290-D piston engines, the prototype PA-23 was a four-seat, low wing, all-metal monoplane. The Piper Aztec was redesigned with a single vertical stabilizer, an all-metal rear fuselage, and more powerful Lycoming O-230-A engines of 150 hp.

Introduced in 1962 as a more powerful version of its older ‘Apache’ sibling, the first Piper PA 23 Aztec featured 250 horsepower, normally aspirated Lycoming engines, a swept tail, and seating for five. Manufactured until 1982, the model moved through series A through F.

The PA 23-150 Apache hit the market in 1954, evolved to 160-hp engines in 1957, then leaped to 235 hp per side as simply a lower-powered version of its offspring, the 250-hp Aztec, which had debuted in 1960.
