Fain overpowers Lan and takes the dagger. Fain finds the dagger left carelessly in the room in the inn. Fain steals the dagger from Lan or Moraine. No matter how it happened, it was not shown, nor was there any reasons built in to suspend belief and roll with it. So it was plot armor and filched because I really don't see Fain out fighting Lan.
