ES1: This paj ntaub story cloth depicts the Hmong creation story, also available as a published ESL book. A long time ago, a brother and sister survived a great flood. His name was Nruag Nas (Brother Na), and hers Nkauj Mim (Sister Mee). They were carried on the water in a big drum for many days until the water drained away.

Borders and mountain motifs are ornaments which serve to make the piece complete. Designs such as this are mostly Green Hmong, found on funeral garments and baby carriers, and are referred to as old people’s designs.

This is an alternative system for writing the Hmong/Mong language, thought to have been invented a long time ago (but see note below) and based on traditional woven symbols. It is called Paj Ntaub, translating roughly as “flower cloth script”.
