The Flag of Palau was adopted on 1 January 1981, when the island group separated from the United Nations Trust Territory. As with the flags of several other Pacific island groups, light blue is the color used to represent the ocean and the nation's place within it.

Local desire for a separate state and government was realized on January 1, 1981, and a Palauan flag was hoisted on that occasion.

Palau has flags for its sixteen states. The five stars represent the five hamlets of Aimeliik. The green stripe represents Aimeliik's rainforest, the black stripe represents the fact that it was not conquered and the blue represents Aimeliik's large fishing area.
