One hundred percent of our proceeds go the retired canines. The PAPD Retired K9 Fund is dedicated to ensuring that Port Authority Police dogs receive the medical care they need after their years of active service.

The Port Authority Police Department K9 Unit was formed in 1984 and has since grown into one of the nation’s largest and busiest K9 units. The unit is comprised of police officers and their canine partners specializing in either explosive or narcotics detection.

On September 11, 2001, Port Authority Police Department Lt. David Lim was in the basement below the World Trade Center's South Tower with his K-9 partner Sirius when he felt the building violently tremble.

Memorial for PAPD K-9 Officer Sirius. Sirius was a Yellow Labrador police dog for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department responsible for explosives detection in the World Trade Center complex. [1] . He is noted for being the only working dog fatality of the September 11 attacks.

K9 Sirius died in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. K9 Sirius was in K9 headquarters with his handler when the first plane struck the World Trade Center. His handler put him in his cage to investigate, and was unable to return before the building collapsed.

K9 Britt, a five-year-old explosive detection German Shepherd, served with his partner, Police Officer Thomas Loreto, for three and one-half years protecting the people of New York, New Jersey, and the millions using Port Authority facilities daily.

The Port Authority Police suffered the worst loss of police personnel in a single event in American history: 37 police officers, along with one police K-9 named Sirius, were killed at the World Trade Center complex on September 11.
