The Martin PBM Mariner is a twin-engine American patrol bomber flying boat of World War II and the early Cold War era. It was designed to complement the Consolidated PBY Catalina and PB2Y Coronado in service.

As the successor to the earlier construction of Consolidated PBY Catalina and P3M. The prototype has completed its first flight on February 18, 1939. Aircraft serial began to be delivered in 1941.

A VP-74 PBM piloted by Lt. Richard E. Schreder sank the first submarine to be sunk by U.S. seaplanes in World War II. This sinking was off Bermuda on June 30, 1942, only the third by U.S. navy aircraft and the fifth by U.S. forces. Nine other subs were sunk by PBM’s, all by PBM-3’s, in the Atlantic in 1943.
