A percolation trench, also called an infiltration trench, is a type of best management practice (BMP) that is used to manage stormwater runoff, prevent flooding and downstream erosion, and improve water quality in an adjacent river, stream, lake or bay.
An infiltration trench typically consists of a gravel-filled trench that allows stormwater to soak into the ground. Various infiltration trench designs exist; a design may include an overflow, an underdrain or vegetation.
An Infiltration Trench is a linear stormwater BMP consisting of a continuously perforated pipe at a minimum slope in a stone-filled trench (Figure 6.4-1).
