The pesh-kabz or peshkabz (Persian: پیش قبض, Hindi: पेश क़ब्ज़) [1] is a type of Indo-Persian knife designed to penetrate mail armour and other types of armour. [2] [3] [4] The word is also spelled pesh-qabz or pish-ghabz and means "fore-grip" in the Persian language; it was borrowed into the Hindustani language. [1]

Daggers of this type, called pesh-kabz in Persian, have a straight or curved single-edged blade of T-shaped cross-section that tapers to an acute point. They were used in Iran and northern India in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This Indian example is distinctive for its jeweled nephrite jade hilt and delicately pierced scabbard mounts.

The pesh-kabz is an Indo-Persian knife used extensively in northern India and Afghanistan. It has similarities to the Khyber knife, or choora, but has a significantly shorter blade. Although intended for ceremonial use, this dagger features discretely carved talismanic inscriptions of the kind found on arms and armor that were designed for battle. It bears a gold inlaid vase with flowers on both sides of the blade. Within the vase are Arabic inscriptions reading "Blessings from Allah" and "Victory from Allah."

For sale from a private collection. An antique dagger referred to as a pesh-kabz. These daggers were worn among others by the infamous Pashtun of the Khyber region. It has a long, slender blade with a 11mm T-shaped spine reinforcement that provides great stiffness to an otherwise thin blade. A secondary bevel forms the still very sharp edge.
