A PET/MRI scan is a two-in-one test that combines images from a positron emission tomography (PET) scan and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. This new hybrid technology harnesses the strengths of PET and MRI to produce some of the most highly detailed pictures of the inside of your body currently available.

Positron emission tomography–magnetic resonance imaging (PET–MRI) is a hybrid imaging technology that incorporates magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) soft tissue morphological imaging and positron emission tomography (PET) functional imaging. [1] The combination of PET and MRI was mentioned in a 1991 Phd thesis by R. Raylman. [2] .

Patients may have imaging completed at Kootenai Health or at Kootenai Outpatient Imaging. Patients who are currently admitted to the hospital, in an emergency, or who require an MRI or Nuclear Medicine procedure, will have imaging completed within the hospital.

Some hospitals now use a hybrid PET/MRI scan. This new technology creates extremely high-contrast images. Providers mainly use this type of scan for diagnosing and monitoring cancers of the soft tissues (brain, head and neck, liver and pelvis).

In a PET/MRI, highly detailed MRI images are superimposed with the functional imaging of the PET to create radiological images that pinpoint exact locations in the body where an abnormality or disease occurs. One appointment is needed for the PET/MR scan.
