NHS England is rolling out a national standardised approach of tracking the deterioration of children in hospital. The National Paediatric Early Warning System or PEWS will allow for consistency in how deterioration in children is recognised.

HIGH RISK - PEWS Score reds . Consider EMERGENCY ADMISSION . Children who symptoms or combination of symptoms suggest an immediately life threatening illness, including children with fever who are shocked, unrousable or showing signs of meningococcal disease – consider AMBULANCE TRANSFER.

A Paediatric Early Warning System (PEWS) is designed to effectively recognise and respond to the deterioration of children or young people in a healthcare environment. Scotland and Northern Ireland already have nation-wide PEWS in place. Summary information on the Scottish PEWS can be found below.

Vital signs and observations are essential to assess the child’s clinical status; using Paediatric Early Warning Score (PEWS) system enables the early recognition of sick patients and management of any deterioration. Vital signs include heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and temperature.

The new national Paediatric Early Warning System (PEWS) chart monitors deterioration in children in inpatient settings, and is supported by other aspects of the PEWS. This elearning module is for all clinicians who will complete, interpret or use the updated PEWS chart in an inpatient setting.

As part of the National PEWS programme, we agreed to undertake a review of PEWS (Paediatric Early Warning Score) charts currently in use within England. Feedback from coroners, the CQC and CEMACH as well variations noted in evidence-based reviews on existing scores and systems suggested a national PEWS chart would provide safer care.

In partnership with the Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health and the Royal College of Nursing, NHS England has developed the Paediatric Early Warning System to help doctors and nurses to quickly identify deterioration, escalate care, and act on parental concerns.

• Adaptation: Expansion and adaptation of the use of PEWS System into A&E, Community, Ambulance, Primary care –work to start from April 2020 onwards. • Digital: confirm national NHS specification for PEWS charts and build into digital ambition to digitize all hospital e-observations.
