It covers a rectangle of land 45 miles (75km) long and 15 miles (25km) wide, to the north lies Rheinhessen; to the south, the French border and Alsace.

Palatinate (/ p ə ˈ l æ t ɪ n ɪ t /; German: Pfalz) is a German wine-growing region (Weinbaugebiet) in the area of Bad Dürkheim, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, and Landau in Rhineland-Palatinate. Before 1993, it was known as Rhine Palatinate ( Rheinpfalz ).

With 23,698 hectares of vineyards, the Pfalz is the second largest German wine-growing region and is made up of two areas, Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße and Südliche Weinstraße. The main focus of the winegrowers in the cultivation area limited and protected by the Pfälzerwald forest, is on classic grape varieties, especially Riesling.
