Malay weavers had been supplying elegant gold and silk brocades, called pha yok (ผ้ายก) in Thai, to the Siamese (Thai) court since at least the 18th century. During the early 19th century, a group of Malay weavers brought the craft to Nakhon Si Thammarat province in Southern Thailand, sharing their skills with local women.

The northern province of Lamphun has long been known for its high-quality silk and reportedly made the outfits worn by Her Majesty the Queen at the ceremony. Hand-woven silk brocade, or "pha mai yok dok" is regarded as a cultural heritage in Lamphun, where the weaving technique has been passed on for generations among local people.

Chok and pha yok are further characterized by supplementary threads that remain only in the patterned area. Pha yok, in particular, uses metallic supplementary weft threads to create a glimmering effect on the finished cloth.
