The most remarkable Arctic rescue of World War II involved B-17 PN9E, which was reported missing somewhere in southeastern Greenland on Nov. 9, 1942. An air search was launched and on Nov. 24, the plane finally was discovered by Col. Bernt Balchen 40 miles inland from the Greenland coast.

This coastline included three fjords. Comanche Bay fjord was the easterly one, and larger Koge Bay fjord was the westerly one.

The B-17 PN9E was one of many aircraft taking part in a search for a downed C-53 Skytrooper when it flew into whiteout conditions and crashed on a Greenland glacier. Due to the remote location and extreme weather conditions the survivors were stranded for five months.
