Pointing is the process of filling the outer part of the joints between masonry units with mortar. This can be done either as work proceeds, by striking off the bedding mortar flush with the face of the masonry, or as a separate exercise if the outer part of bedding mortar has been deliberately left recessed or is raked back from the surface.

Cleaning is quite critical with lime, as dusty joints will prevent the lime from adhering to the stone and old mortar, with cement that would not be so problematic. If you need to remove old, hard cement pointing care must be taken not to damage the stonework.

Where defective or open mortar joints do exist, these can easily be pointed with an appropriate and compatible mortar, to match any existing or original mortar in colour, texture and performance.
