Polyps are commonly found in the colon, stomach, nose, ear, sinus (es), urinary bladder, and uterus. They may also occur elsewhere in the body where there are mucous membranes, including the cervix, vocal folds, and small intestine.

When numerous polyps are present, rather than just one or a few, doctors refer to it as polyposis. A number of syndromes, collectively known as GI polyposis syndromes, are characterized by the presence of numerous polyps—sometimes hundreds or thousands—in the colon, rectum, and/or other parts of the GI tract.

Neoplastic (adenomatous) colorectal polyps are benign tumors that originate from the mucus-secreting colonic epithelial cells. Adenomatous polyps are common, especially in western countries, occurring, in the United States, in 20–40% of screening colonoscopies in people older than 50 years of age.

Performing risk assessment for polyposis syndromes can be complicated, as there are many genes that, when mutated, can increase the risk of polyps. Polyp histology, in particular, as well as polyp number, size and anatomic location of polyps can help narrow down the differential diagnosis (Figure 1).

Colorectal polyps are often classified by their behaviour (i.e. benign vs. malignant) or cause (e.g. as a consequence of inflammatory bowel disease). They may be benign (e.g. hyperplastic polyp), pre-malignant (e.g. tubular adenoma) or malignant (e.g. colorectal adenocarcinoma). Colorectal polyps are not usually associated with symptoms. [2] .

Polyps are abnormal growths that start in the inner lining of the colon or rectum. Some polyps are flat while others have a stalk. Colorectal polyps can grow in any part of the colon. Most often, they grow in the left side of the colon and in the rectum. While the majority of polyps will not become cancer, certain types may be precancerous.

Polyps may be sessile or pedunculated and vary considerably in size. Incidence of polyps ranges from 7 to 50%; the higher figure includes very small polyps (usually hyperplastic polyps or adenomas) found at autopsy. Polyps, often multiple, occur most commonly in the rectum and sigmoid and decrease in frequency toward the cecum.

A polyp is a fleshy growth on the inside of the large bowel. Some people may develop just a single polyp, while others may develop many. Polyps are very common, especially in the Western world, and are a little more commonly found in men than women. They are unusual below the age of 40 and seem to occur most often in people over the age of 60.
