Porsche 901 was the name originally intended for the Porsche 911. By the early 1960s, Porsche project design numbers had reached into the 800s. For instance, Porsche's 1962 F1 model was called Porsche 804.

The Porsche 901 is the earliest iteration of the iconic 911 lineage, and refers to the first 232 cars produced during 1964, with both 1964 and 1965 model years, and both 911 and 901 designations. The latter were the initial 82 units produced before Porsche rebranded the designation to 911 due to a trademark issue with Peugeot.

It was only in May 1964 that development of the vehicle had advanced to a stage that the new model could be presented to industry professionals.

At the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (Frankfurt Motor Show) in Frankfurt in September 1963, Porsche presented the 901. It took several more months until the cars were manufactured for sale to customers. Between 14 September and 16 November 1964, 82 cars were built and the 901 was presented in October at the 1964 Paris Auto Salon.
