Portland Head Light, Cape Elizabeth, Maine When you visit the promontory where the lighthouse is located, you'll see an interesting rock formation that looks like petrified wood. However, it's made of alternating layers of quartzite and dark grey phyllite.

Adjacent to Fort Williams Park, The Portland Head Light is the most photographed lighthouse in America, and the oldest in Maine. Fort Williams Park spans over 90 acres and offers a wide range of recreational activities for visitors.

The lighthouse tower is open to the public only once a year, on Maine Open Lighthouse Day. Fort Williams Park is a vast ninety-acre park adjacent to the lighthouse, offering picnic facilities, hiking opportunities, sports and recreation areas, historic structures, and endless ocean views.

The museum tells the history of Portland Head Light through a variety of exhibits that display different artifacts and documents, navigational aids, Fresnel lenses, models, and photographs.

Portland Head Light Vista Fort Williams Park welcomes buses and tours to visit our museum, headlight, and other amenities throughout the park. There is a fee of $230.00 per visit for each tour bus entering the park.

The second Ecology Project site, Lighthouse View, contains a beautiful example of a native meadow with wildflowers enjoyed by people and pollinators alike. The transformation of this highly-trafficked space adjacent to the lighthouse can serve to raise awareness and inspire expanded stewardship of the environment.
