As I sat there deciding what film I should highlight for the year 1981 in my 100 Years of Horror retrospective, there was one in particular that kept drawing me in with its nightmarish gravitational pull: Possession. My psyche was in turmoil. On the one hand, fantastic, I have an excuse to rewatch Possession.

2023年1月12日 · Possession is a lot to take in. If you go in expecting a straight forward horror film you will, naturally, be confused/annoyed/find it unenjoyable. Yes, the films heightened tone is 100% purposeful. It's "overacted" intentionally, because the film is more of an absurdist black comedy than you usually hear people discuss.

This movie would make for a perfectly uncomfortable double feature with Cronenberg’s The Brood. I definitely need to give Possession a rewatch, it is such a hypnotic film. Really sucks you into the strange horror the characters are going through, similar to The Shining in that sense.

2022年3月21日 · 200 votes, 21 comments. true. This movie is legitimately one of the scariest movies I have ever seen. Filmed in Berlin I believe, during a time in which the Berlin Wall still stood, the landscape in which the film is shot oozes a sort of isolation and decay.

When Anna vanishes, Mark meets his sons schoolteacher who seems to be a doppelgänger of his wife, though she has blonde hair and green eyes. She seems to be everything his wife isn’t. An idealistic version of her.

2020年2月16日 · I recently rewatched Andrzej Zulawski’s Possession (1981) for the first time in 5 years. There is just something about this movie I can’t explain. Its over the top performances, its brutal scenes of argument, its horrifying visuals, its exploration of marital disintegration and disbelief in god - there’s just something hypnotic about it.

2020年5月26日 · I found it even more disturbing and uncomfortable than Possession and it almost makes me feel like Possession is more of a comedy than it lets on. Diabel also deals with prominent mythological symbology (like the devil durr) and concepts of war, Oedipal psychology, etc, so watching more Zulawski might give you some more context around Possession.

The director's commentary is worth checking out if you like it as well. My friends and I did a podcast about the movie so I ended up watching it 3 times in a weekend (twice normally, once with the commentary) and the commentary gives some insight into what prompted Zulawski to make such a weird but awesome movie.
