Willem Kalf was one of the most celebrated, sought after, and successful still-life painters of the seventeenth century. With its off-center pyramidal composition, this Still Life is a quintessential example of a compositional format that Kalf used in the late 1650s and early 1660s.

Willem Kalf (1619 – 31 July 1693) was one of the most prominent Dutch still-life painters of the 17th century, the Dutch Golden Age. We first get acquainted with Willem Kalf through Arnold Houbraken, in his Groot Schilderboek, who speaks very highly of him. [1] In fact, Kalf was a highly regarded and celebrated artist during his own lifetime.

Willem Kalf was one of the most celebrated, sought after, and successful still-life painters of the seventeenth century. Despite the lack of documentary evidence that he operated a workshop with assistants, the existence of multiple replicas by less adroit hands indicates that Kalf did employ assistants during his years in Amsterdam.

Willem Kalf (born November 3, 1619, Rotterdam—died July 31, 1693, Amsterdam) was one of the best-known Dutch painters of still-life compositions. Kalf was a student of Hendrik Pot, a painter of historical subjects, and probably also of the painter Cornelis Saftleven.

Kalf's most famous (and largest at 2 meters tall) work from his Parisian period is a stunning still life featuring precious vessels, armor, and weapons, created in 1644-45, likely commissioned by Marshal de Tessé and now housed in the Musée de Tessé, Le Mans.

Baptised on 3 November 1619 in Rotterdam, Willem Kalf was a son of Jan Jansz. Kalf and Machtelt Gerrits, both of whom were from Gouda. His father was a well-to-do cloth merchant who held various offices in city government. According to Houbraken, Willem Kalf was a pupil of Hendrick Pot, but this seems to be uncertain.
