Despite the lack of documentary evidence that he operated a workshop with assistants, the existence of multiple replicas by less adroit hands indicates that Kalf did employ assistants during his years in Amsterdam.

His father was a well-to-do cloth merchant who held various offices in city government. According to Houbraken, Willem Kalf was a pupil of Hendrick Pot, but this seems to be uncertain.
