2006年4月8日 · Scapulars are a row of feathers growing from the shoulder/back area (hence the name) that tend to cover the boundary between the body and the wing. Compare the diagram and the photo and try to visualize how the feathers fit when the wing folds up. Then go to the gallery and find the same feathers in other photos.

2006年8月8日 · Isn't it more common than a complete albino, to see an individual which lacks pigment in just a few groups of feathers. In british corvids pigment loss in flight feathers can be caused a parasite infestation, but I've seen Fieldfare, Reed Bunting, Redwing and Meadow Pipits, which had entirely white areas of feathers, but are not truely albino.

Primary projection is the distance between the tip of the tertial feathers and the tip of the primary feathers. This is usually expressed as a fraction: i.e. the primary extension divided by the length of the longest tertial. This helps with the identification of some similar species.

2025年1月23日 · I'm wondering what are the best ID features to look out for that might be a good candidate for Caspian Gull when the bird is sitting or in water, i.e. I cannot see the legs, nor primary feathers. Just so I don't end up overly focusing on a Herring gull - not that they aren't a nice bird! For example see the attached image.
