Privy digging is the process of locating and investigating the contents of defunct outhouse vaults. The purpose of privy digging is the salvage of antique bottles and everyday household artifacts from the past.

Privy Digging is the excavation of the contents of old, filled in outhouse pits, to reclaim the bottles and historical artifacts that were tossed in during the time period as garbage. Back before curbside garbage pick up, folks just tossed their garbage, through the hole, into the outhouse pit.

As you begin to dig, always make the opening as small as possible, even if it's a deep privy. A mistake beginners often make the hole large, right off the bat. The general rule is that your success is inversely proportional to the size of the opening.
