They became the railroad's standard light freight locomotive, replacing all other class H 2-8-0s, and a number remained in service until the end of PRR steam locomotive operation in 1957. 968 class H8 of various subclasses were constructed, along with 274 class H9s and 273 class H10s.

Some interesting characteristics of the H-9 are that it had 62-inch drivers, and it utilized 205 pounds of boiler pressure. Between the years of 1907 and 1916 the companies of Alco, Baldwin, Juniata Shops, and Lima together constructed a total of 1,206 engines, some of which were H-9s.

In addition, 312 H8s were rebuilt into H9s and 200 more H8s were rebuilt into H10s. Baldwin, the ALCO plants in Pittsburgh and Brooks, and the PRR Juniata shops in Altoona were involved in the production of the individual variants. The retirements began in 1933 and were completed by 1960.

The PRR classified articulated locomotives and joined locomotive units by using multiples of the previous classifications. Non-Articulated steam: 1320 - 2-2-2-0 locomotive, based on the London and North Western Railway 's Dreadnought Class locomotive.

2013年1月29日 · I recently repaired Ben Neal's locomotives found in his website (thanks for the helpful suggestions from everyone), but my favorite steam locomotive of all times, the PRR H9 Consolidation by Bill Klene, has me stumped.

2025年2月5日 · Both Key, and Sunset's 2 runs (1985 run H9, 1993 run H8) all employ a similar looking tender, but is distinctly different than what's pictured above. The brass tenders have a much more extreme drop in height behind the coal bunker. while the H9 tender pictured above has sides that only drop slightly behind the raised coal bunker.
