The Puw 2509 watch movement, produced from 1972 to 1974, features a special regulator accessible through the opened battery cabinet. The stem can be released by sliding a mechanism. This non-self-starting movement incorporates a hack mechanism that halts the balance in a position enabling reliable starting when the crown is pushed in.

PUW 2509 - This movement was the best and last mens' size, non quartz-controlled movement, made in Pforzheim. As the former construction with electric contacts was not free from trouble, this movement not only worked without them, but also got an integrated circuit, which was responsible for the correct polarization of the moving coil.

With 17 jewels, a swiss pallet escapement, an incabloc shock protection and 21600 beats per hour, it matched the standards of the early 70ies movements. Another, maybe cheaper version, also called “Dugena 2509”, of the 561 was equipped with the uncommon Ruby-Neutro-Shock shock protection system.

Here we have another example of West-German craftsmanship fitted into a Gruen Electronic. The PUW company, otherwise called Porta (Uhrenfabrik Wehner), invented a series of over-engineered electronic movements that can be found in a dozen or so makes including some American such as Helbros or Gruen.

Presented here is a bigger version of a Gruen Electronic with PUW2509 calibre. This one is a real 1970's giant when on the wrist good for wrestling :) As most German technology the PUW is a bit over-engineered by making simple things complex... or rather plain and thus unusual while handling the movement.
